Minor & Parental Document Notarization

Helping Parents & Families with Important Documents

A mother and her young daughter smiling at an airport terminal. The daughter holds her U.S. passport while her mother stands beside her with luggage, preparing for international travel.

Temporary caregiving arrangements may involve documents that authorize another adult to care for a child or make certain decisions on the child's behalf.

These documents may be used when parents are traveling, temporarily unavailable, or arranging for another responsible adult to assist with their child's care.

The appropriate document depends on the family's circumstances and Tennessee law. A notarized parental authorization does not automatically establish legal guardianship.

How to Prepare:

1. Obtain the appropriate document from an attorney or another reliable source.

2. Complete the required information.

3. Confirm which individuals must sign the document.

4. Have all required signers available for notarization.

5. Bring acceptable identification for each signer.

Important Information:

Colleen W Notary Services provides notarization services for eligible documents. We do not prepare legal documents, establish guardianship, or provide legal advice.

Minor Power of Attorney (Child POA)

A notary professional assisting a mother and her daughter with paperwork at a desk. The mother reviews and signs a document while her daughter sits beside her.

What Is a Minor Power of Attorney?

A Minor Power of Attorney is a legal document that may allow a parent or legal guardian to delegate certain responsibilities or decision-making authority concerning their child to another trusted adult.

Depending on the document and applicable Tennessee law, this may include responsibilities involving education, medical care, or temporary caregiving.

A Minor Power of Attorney is not necessarily the same as a court-appointed guardianship.

When Might You Need One?

Parents or guardians may consider this type of document when:

1. They will be temporarily unavailable to care for their child.

2. A child will be staying with a relative or another trusted adult.

3. They need to arrange temporary authority for certain school or medical matters.

4. They are making temporary caregiving arrangements.

How to Prepare for Notarization

1. Obtain an appropriate

Tennessee-specific document from a qualified legal professional or reliable legal resource.

2. Complete the required information, including the names of the parent or guardian and the person receiving authority.

3. Confirm which individuals must sign the document.

4. Review any required effective dates, expiration dates, or limitations.

5. Bring acceptable identification and have the required signers available for notarization.

Important Information

A notarized signature does not automatically make a power of attorney legally valid or appropriate for every situation.

Colleen W Notary Services can notarize eligible signatures but cannot draft legal documents, determine which powers should be granted, or provide legal advice.
